Superfoods
Aside from almost all non-GMO fruit and veg, which is good for us, there are some particular branches of the food chain that have recently become popular. Sometimes for their known attributes in helping cancer patients, and sometimes because of their capacity to help boost the immune system, they have become known as 'superfoods'.
If you happen to be based in the Midwest of Ireland, for a visit to a place where you can get great advice, and purchase all manner of healthfoods, vitamins and minerals, together with more information on foods that are rich in nutritional value, we recommend Horan's Health Store in Roches St, Limerick.
Baobab
Native to mainland Africa, and Madagascar, the fruit of the Baobab tree is incredibly rich in beneficial substances. It also tastes great in chocolate!
Spirulina
Although I was under the impression that Spirulina is a form of seaweed, when I first tasted it, further research tells me it is an algae.
Pomegranate
Symbolised by the Hallowe'en festival, around the time of Samhain, the pomegranate fruit is an incredible source of antioxidants and flavinoids.
Soursop
Also called graviola, soursop is a large, spiny, green tropical fruit with a sweet flesh that is found in Mexico, Cuba and other parts of South America.
Turmeric
One of the oldest known of the herbs and spices known to man, is Turmeric. Along with cumin, coriander and garlic, I try to cook with it as often as possible!
Cannabis
Okay so technically a herb and not a foodstuff, cannabis is nonetheless extremely versatile and beneficial to man.
