Sunyata, quite literally meaning "emptiness", "void", or "spaciousness", in the Sanskrit, is the name of the Clare-based retreat centre in the beautiful rolling foothills of the townlands of Sixmilebridge around Broadford and Kilkishen, in East Clare, Munster, Ireland.
In my book I mention my local Buddhist retreat centre quite often, and I guess it is no secret I have become very fond of the place over the last few years that I have been attending as a student of yoga and meditation.
Within half an hour travel from the city of Limerick, the ancient capital of Ireland, it's location is stunning, and situated in an environment perfect for reflection, inspiration and meditation. And poetry!
Sunyata offers Meditation Retreats, weekly meditation classes (both beginners and advanced meditators), Yoga classes, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction courses (see MBSR).
Alongside visiting monks and nuns, we are lucky to have guest speakers and experienced teachers, from Nick Scott and Vince Cullen, to Stephen and Martine Bachelor.
The centre is primarily devoted to the teaching of Vipassana, or Insight Meditation, as taught in the Thai Forest tradition of Theravada Buddhism in the lineage of Ajahn Chah and Ajahn Sumedho.
