About The Author

Hi, welcome to my website :) The blog section is updated quite regularly so feel free to browse the blog links - feedback and thoughts welcome.

I understand I won't be everybody's cup of tea, nonethless the many issues and themes raised in my book, from family struggles, addictions, low self-esteem  and depression, to mindfulness meditation,  door-to-door sales and the absolutely fabulous Manchester City F.C., are close to the heart of many! I hope you will enjoy and appreciate my honesty!

Carl J Ashley

Aside from lurching from one mid-life crisis to the next, Carl J Ashley has successfully negotiated the transition from rather anonymous and somewhat bland thirtysomethingness, to eagerly anticipated, fruitfully mysterious and potentially exciting fortysomethingness.

By writing another book.

Notwithstanding a desire to travel, drink copious amounts of red wine and follow his beloved Manchester City FC, albeit not necessarily in that order, the Mancunian poet, writer and philosopher made this metamorphosis with no small upheaval.

It is no mere achievement that he has managed this transition without losing complete grip of what remains of his sanity.

Following on from the successful online poetry page, entitled “Carl’s Corner”, his next book, entitled “The Fox and the Scorpion Meet Cold Turkey” is likely to be met with a mixed reception and focuses on several themes. Of prominence is his ongoing addiction battle, dealing with depression, and striving to be a good husband and father whilst having no money, being out of work, and struggling to make ends meet.

He also charts the meteoric progress of M.C.F.C. and his involvement with Clare Cricket, but people will most likely be able to relate to his encounters, and admire his ability to still find humour in his situation as an Englishman dislocated in rural Ireland.

"I thoroughly enjoyed your story from start to finish and could relate to so much of it. We have similar outlooks on capitalism and my left wing views broadly align with yours. Your story is a truly honest and uplifting one and the struggle is one many people are facing on some level...Perhaps not at the numerous levels you experienced. I think you've got a great and natural way with words and my working classness meant I got you...and your worldview. My brother who also loves the velvet underground has nicked it....between the soccer and snooker, socialist tendencies and human interest aspects it's also right down his street. I loved it Carl...I am now dying to follow the story from Canada...I hope that's the plan?!?!

I thoroughly enjoyed your book...you have a great way of merging humour with sadness. Well done Carl!! You should be very proud. A really great story and achievement." Miriam Doran, Clare

"In my attempt to stay poison-free, I found the surfacing memories of the past and the bubbling desires of the present colliding in a way, which resulted in something akin to a mental maelstrom, indeed, causing emotional turmoil. Paranoid and delusional or insightful and wise? I began to question everything, including who or what I had become." Carl J Ashley
